Hotel Indigo Wuxi Cuibei is a boutique neighborhood hotel under InterContinental Hotels Group, designed by HBA. Its core design narrative draws from Wuxi’s ancient canals, Jiangnan stone bridges, Taihu ripples and the industrial heritage of old flour mills, focusing on immersive local aesthetics of “one unique story for every city”. The hotel covers six functional zones: lobby, all-day dining restaurant, guest corridor, guest rooms & suites, lobby lounge and meeting rooms. All areas adopt custom SINICO hand-tufted carpets with zone-specific patterns and materials, solving multiple core pain points including aesthetic presentation, daily operation and long-term maintenance for boutique hotels.

1.Early Design Stage: Why Hand Tufted Carpet? Core Pain Points & Solutions

1)Industry-wide Pain Points for Boutique Hotels

i. Aesthetic challenge: The Indigo brand excels in localized cultural storytelling, but standardized manufactured carpets fail to capture the rippling patterns of Taihu Lake, the texture of stone bridges, or the intricate surface of ancient canals
—creating a disconnect in spatial design and diminishing the distinctive identity of boutique hotels. Standard woven carpets feature flat, two-dimensional patterns lacking depth and dimension, unable to support the premium aesthetic quality of HBA’s high-end soft furnishings.

ii.2. Operational Challenges: 24-hour foot traffic in hotels leads to luggage dragging in guest corridors, spills of beverages and coffee in restaurants, and frequent foot traffic in lobbies—causing conventional carpets to pill, flatten, and show signs of wear within 3 to 6 months. During Jiangnan’s rainy season, high humidity causes ordinary carpets to mold and develop unpleasant odors. Additionally, standard carpets fail to meet fire safety standards, preventing approval for hotel fire inspections.

iii. Acoustic Challenges: Premium guest rooms, lobby bars, and meeting rooms require a quiet atmosphere. Low-quality carpets offer poor sound absorption, while the noise from slippers and luggage carts significantly reduces guest experience ratings.

iv.Operation and Maintenance Challenges: The patterns of the batch-produced woven carpets are monotonous. Once a certain area is damaged, it cannot be replaced with the same color; instead, the entire section has to be removed and replaced. This leads to high renovation costs and long downtime for the business. There is no dedicated archive for the patterns, resulting in color discrepancies when re-patching.

2)Targeted Solutions

i. Cultural aesthetics implementation: We support 1:1 replication of local elements from Wuxi, using layered relief and three-dimensional weaving techniques. We transform stone bridges, water patterns, fishing sails, and the texture of flour mills into high-low pile-like three-dimensional textures, perfectly matching the design theme of the “Jiangnan Neighborhood” of the hotel. Each carpet is a space soft decoration artwork.

ii.Silent noise reduction experience: The porous structure of natural wool enhances sound absorption, eliminating harsh noises during walking and dragging. The quietness in guest rooms and meeting rooms is significantly improved, thereby boosting the positive reviews on OTA platforms.

iii. Long-term operation cost reduction: Global permanent anti-fouling coating. Coffee and red wine stains can be wiped clean with one swipe, reducing cleaning time by half.

iv. Special-shaped space adaptation: The entire fabric is woven as a single piece without any extra seams. It precisely fits curved corridors, arched partitions, and irregular lobbies, with neat and smooth closures, creating a unified visual effect of the space.

3)Zoned Custom Design for 4 Functional Zones

i.Guest Rooms & Suites

Pattern: Low-saturation cyan-grey Taihu ripple gradient texture, light beige base with pale cyan water ripples. Micro embossed pile restores lake surface shimmer, with subtle mini stone bridge hidden patterns matching room arch bed headboards.

Design concept: Soft and low-saturation colors reduce the cold feeling of the hard furniture in the room. The thick velvet surface provides extreme silence. When guests walk barefoot, it feels soft and comfortable. The moisture-proof and antibacterial material is suitable for the rainy season in the Jiangnan region, eliminating complaints about moldy odors in the rooms.

ii.Guest Corridors (High Traffic Zone)

Pattern: Dark grey base ink-wash ancient canal vein texture, interwoven light & dark grey simulating flowing water. Dark base conceals dirt, sand and luggage scratches effectively.

Design logic: The flowing linear texture visually stretches the narrow corridor, and reserved expansion and contraction gaps to accommodate the temperature and humidity changes in the Jiangnan region; the corner metal reinforcement ensures a smooth edge and prevents luggage from scraping or warping.

iii.Lobby

Pattern: Layered 3D weaving integrating Jiangnan stone bridges, fishing sails and Taihu mist, olive green & off-white gradient. Serves as core visual landmark matching lobby arch bridge arches.

Design concept: The three-dimensional relief enhances the luxurious feel of the lobby, continues the hotel’s cultural narrative, enables photo-taking opportunities, and elevates the hotel’s high-end image; the entire area is woven as a single piece without any seams, presenting an elegant and complete appearance.

4)Lobby Lounge

Pattern: Light grey gradient dotted shimmer texture, fine gilded lines simulating broken lake light, soft luxury tone for afternoon tea & casual talks.

Design logic: The silent velvet surface effectively blocks the noise of conversations, creating a relaxed and quiet social space, and reducing the cold and hard texture of the metal bar counter.

4)Sampling, Approval & Pre-production

i. Provide 1:1 physical color cards and embossed samples for each area, matching the hotel’s wood finishes, arched ceilings, and soft furnishing fabrics for repeated color calibration, and unifying the overall Jiangnan aesthetic style.

ii. Provide a complete set of third-party test reports: B1 flame retardancy, anti-mold, anti-static, color fastness, eco-friendly EO grade. Complete the double review for hotel fire safety and decoration.

iii. Output a complete set of CAD paving construction drawings, marking irregular dimensions, arched edges, furniture alignment, and expansion joint positions, suitable for the hotel’s large number of irregular spaces.

 2.On-site Installation & Implementation

1)Base Pre-treatment

ii. The entire floor surface is thoroughly cleaned and polished, removing floor cement, oil stains, and dust. The floor is coated with moisture-proof interface agent and fully covered with silent buffer pads to prevent moisture from penetrating the floor and address the problem of dampness and mold on the lower floors in the Jiangnan region.

ii. The floor levelness is calibrated, with the height difference controlled within ≤2mm to avoid local pressure on the carpet, causing wear, bulging, or deformation.

2)Zoned Installation Standard

i. Guest room corridor: Edge-locking jointing technique, fixed with environmentally friendly glue in dot form, with reserved temperature expansion and contraction gaps; Arched door openings and corner areas are equipped with metal reinforcement edge strips to prevent luggage from lifting and warping;

ii. Lobby/Dining hall large handmade carpets: Precisely position the bar counter, partitions, and table positions according to the drawings, cut the entire piece, and handle the seams with high-temperature heat stamping to achieve seamless connection, with no visual breaks; Arc-shaped wall edges and glass partitions are sealed with metal edge strips, making them exquisite and preventing curling;

iii. Conference rooms/Guest rooms small carpets: Unspliced installation for the entire carpet, reserved buffer positions at the bottom of furniture to reduce long-term heavy pressure and collapse.

3)Finished Product Protection & Acceptance

i. Install fully covered waterproof and dust-proof protective film, set up construction barriers, and implement full isolation during soft decoration entry; add anti-slip protective pads at the bottom of furniture to prevent damage to the embossed fabric surface caused by hard bases.

ii. Four-stage layered acceptance: moisture-proof acceptance of the base layer → acceptance of the laying flatness → acceptance of the alignment of the embossed patterns → on-site review of fire safety and environmental protection.

iii. Complete delivery of completion archives: CAD drawings for zone laying, material test reports, real-time construction images, zone dimensions, and original factory pattern color cards are archived.

3.Long-term Hotel Maintenance Plan

1)Daily standardized cleaning (suitable for 24-hour hotel operation)

Guest corridor: Vacuuming is carried out during the morning and evening peak hours every day, and local wet cleaning is conducted weekly. Dark base surfaces are quickly maintained.

Lobby and restaurant: Vacuuming is performed daily. After meals, stains from beverages and food are wiped immediately. The anti-stain coating helps quickly remove dirt.

Guest rooms, meeting rooms, and lobby bar: Vacuuming is carried out daily. Professional dry cleaning is conducted every two weeks. The three-dimensional relief textures are protected from flattening or fading.

2)Periodic Professional Maintenance

i. Monthly: Whole-house antibacterial and dust-reducing spray, inhibiting the growth of mold and unpleasant odors in the humid environment of the south;

ii. Quarterly: Special wool conditioner for nourishing the pile, restoring softness and elasticity, and preventing long-term collapse due to trampling;

iii. Annual: Comprehensive deep cleaning, testing the moisture-proof layer at the bottom and back, and repairing minor loose threads and frayed edges.

4.Project Core Value Highlights

i. Aesthetic Value: Our hand-carved relief carpets embody Hotel Indigo’s core brand concept of “One City, One Story”. We integrate Wuxi’s cultural heritage of ancient canals, stone bridges and Taihu Lake into floor soft furnishings, creating unique photo-worthy spaces that set the hotel apart from generic standardized properties across the industry..

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:Does hand-tufted carpet require a longer lead time than woven carpet? What was the delivery timeline for this project?

A: Custom hand-tufted carpets involve separate sampling and 3D relief weaving processes, which extend production time compared with mass-produced woven carpets. However, we optimized workflows to align with hotel fit-out schedules. For Hotel Indigo Wuxi Cuibei, we started zoning sampling and color matching in advance alongside HBA’s design work, produced carpets in batches and installed them zone by zone. The entire process from design confirmation to full handover kept pace with the hotel’s final fit-out phase without delaying overall renovation. For standard hotel carpet projects covering around 3,000 sq.m., the full cycle is controllable within 45–60 days. We can schedule production and construction backwards based on the hotel’s opening date.

Q: Jiangnan sees high humidity during the rainy season. Will wool hand-tufted carpets get moldy or infested easily?

A: No. All carpets for this project underwent three layers of moisture-proof and antibacterial treatment before leaving the factory: a special moisture-resistant backing glue is applied to the carpet base, and long-lasting anti-mold and antibacterial agents are infused into the pile surface. During installation, sound-absorbing moisture-proof underlay was laid across all floors and a moisture-blocking primer was coated on the ground to isolate underground dampness. We also provide a standardized monthly antibacterial and anti-mite maintenance plan. Mold and insect growth are prevented at three stages: product manufacturing, on-site installation and post-handover upkeep. Since the hotel opened, there have been zero guest complaints related to mold, odors or moth damage, making the carpets suitable for long-term use in humid regions like Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai.

Q: For high-traffic areas such as corridors and lobbies, will the 3D relief pile flatten and look worn quickly under constant foot traffic?

A: We reinforced both materials and weaving techniques for high-traffic zones. Guest corridor carpets use thick high-twist wool-blend yarn, and the relief patterns adopt reinforced layered high-low pile tufting, coated with permanent full-area stain-resistant and wear-resistant finish. Quarterly maintenance with specialized wool conditioner restores pile elasticity. Since the hotel went into operation, corridor carpets show no widespread flattening or pilling. The dark base layer conceals daily dirt and scuffs from luggage, delivering far better durability than standard single-layer woven carpets.

Q: If sections of carpet wear out or develop permanent stains later, do renovations require the hotel to suspend operations? Can color consistency be guaranteed for replacements?

A: Full hotel closure is unnecessary; single damaged sections can be replaced separately. Upon project completion, we fully archive original patterns, color swatches and zoned CAD drawings, with a unique reference number assigned to every carpet piece. Damaged areas in corridors or guest rooms can be remade with matching batches of raw materials for zero color difference in patterns and relief textures. Installation work can be scheduled off-peak by room or time slot. Replacing carpet in one guest room takes only half a day, and minor lobby repairs can be carried out overnight during low-traffic hours. Normal daytime hotel operations remain unaffected, drastically cutting revenue losses from renovation shutdowns.

Q: Can hand-tufted carpets meet domestic fire inspection and environmental standards for high-end hotels?

A: They fully comply with all requirements. We supply complete third-party test reports covering five key metrics: Class B1 flame retardancy, E0 eco-grade emission, high color fastness, anti-static performance and anti-mold performance. Eco-friendly flame-retardant fibers are blended into yarn from the spinning stage, with no harsh toxic volatile emissions. All documentation can be submitted prior to installation for joint review by the hotel, fire department and fit-out team. Hotel Indigo Wuxi Cuibei passed fire inspection in one go using our full test documentation, and these material standards are recognized by international chains including InterContinental and Hotel Indigo.
